Fail.

Wow. I have not logged on and updated my blog in way too long. My apologies.
It is time for the outdoor play for the toddlers to begin. This equals (roughly) the worst hour ever. Trying to herd 9 toddlers outside (2 of which are not proficient in walking.) down 6 deadly steps into a sand infested play area is nothing short of hell. Did I mention we also have to dip them in sunscreen before we go outside? Who likes sunscreen? No one. Let the crying wars begin.
So we get outside and naturally the toddlers eat the sand, throw the sand, fall off of slides and fight over shovels and buckets.  I am focused on not getting sand in my shoes their safety while all this madness is occurring.
Who thought this situation could get any worse? Not me.
But IT DOES.
We have now discovered that there are ticks that live in trees. Yes, they land on you when they fall. Disgusting. It only gets better, if you can manage to avoid the falling ticks, you might think you are in the clear. Wrong again. There are also sand fleas.
My little Johnny above has the right idea.
Wish me luck. I will need it.

Sassy Ruth Ann

Meme has become very sassy in her older age. Today when I called her for the third time, she wanted to talk to me about her Big C and how it was terminal... She started to delegate what she wanted me to have and what not. I told her that I didn't want to hear about it, that it made me sad. Meme's response... "Well, I thought you were a grown up now."
Sassy.
So she seems to be doing fine. She has had lots of visitors, phone calls, flowers and cards. She said that is what keeps her going. She has one more procedure tomorrow and then she will be off to rehab at the Amherst Nursing home for a short period of time.

Eva the spider cat

Eva is on top of my door...Crazy, crazy little critter.

Spring Time!

I like to pretend that I can be like Martha Stewart (minus the criminal part!). So today I made some coffee mugs with a spring theme::

My little Meme

Some of you may know that Meme is not doing well. She has had many health complications recently which have resulted in her spending days in the hospital. She has the Big C word which is hard for me to even think about let alone say. She is a trooper though, everyday she has a smile on her face. She is more concerned about Eva's emotional needs (yes, my cat.) than her own. Just keep Meme in your thoughts in the upcoming weeks. She begins chemotherapy tomorrow and she will need all the positive thoughts she can get sent her way. We just want to see her beautiful self as comfortable as she can be.

Batman

I guess this needs a tiny back story... I have been associating with this boy who will be named Batman. Batman was not feeling well recently so I took my teacher like creative mind and put together a comic strip "get well" card. This is the result. Hopefully this made Batman feel better. I
I know I had inappropriate amounts of fun making it!

Too Many Cardigans? Impossible.

Today, my boss asked me how many cardigans I owned. Evidently I wear them a lot. But they are so teacher-esqe that why would I wear anything else. I have to dress the part!! So, naturally I came home and color coordinated all of my cardigans. What a cool kid, I am.

What Shall I Give Up For Lent??

So I try, every year, to give something up for Lent. Not because I am super religious but because it is good to give something up for 40 days and 40 nights. (Josh Hartnett style!) This year I will be giving up swearing.
1. Swearing is so not classy.
2. I do work with toddlers the majority of my waking hours, so that should be a given.
3. It will be fun to substitute swear words with silly nouns. bananas will absolutely be used as a replacement swear word.
Here it goessssssss

Uncle Richard

For anyone that wanted to have the eulogy for Uncle Richard:::

If you know our Uncle Richard at all, you would know he was never the most appropriate uncle in the world. So I can only divulge the suitable stories but I know a few of those memories will pop into your head today because of his crazy antics. He would love for you to laugh about them today.
Uncle Richard is the only one out of his nine siblings that did not live in Western Massachusetts. He moved to the Cape many years ago. The Cape was exactly where he belonged.

He was a Quahogs fisherman. He always cooked up his infamous quahog appetizers. Anytime we visited him in Chatham, he would send us home with a frozen bag of them.  Growing up, I remember him as a fisherman. I knew from a very young age that he loved to go fishing and would often set out on fishing adventures to various ponds and bodies of water. One Christmas, my parents got him his fishing license as his Christmas Eve gift from Santa. He begged me to tell him what it was months before Christmas. He was so persuasive and I was so excited about the present that my little mouth just couldn't keep the secret! I remember him being thrilled with the gift and me begging him not to tell anyone I told him.

One fall day, Uncle Richard even took me fishing! The week leading up to the outing, I set aside different items of clothing that was fisherman like to impress him. I remember I wore thermal underwear, jeans and a plaid button up shirt. Exactly like him. We drove out to a local pond. We both set up our fishing poles as we waited for my Uncle Robbie, Tommy and Jeff. We were out there for an hour and no one had caught anything. All of a sudden my little red fishing pole started to bend, my pole had caught something. Uncle Richard went running over to it and helped me reel in the ONLY catch of the day. It was a cat fish! (Although in fisherman terms, I believe this is not a great catch! He never did lead onto that.) My Uncle Richard gave me all the credit for catching the fish and was boasting for the rest of the day about what a fantastic fisherman I was. I put the cat fish in a 10 gallon bucket in the back of his truck to take it home. Uncle Richard put it in my kiddie pool that my dad had set up in my backyard. I kept the cat fish as my pet!
Uncle Richard was the only person to beat Uncle Robbie and Tommy, the dream team, at a game of basketball. He had a very lucky fade away shot that won the game. That game obviously was talked about for years after. He did earn the bragging rights. In recent years he learned how to play shuffle board on the legendary camping trips to the Cape with Aunty Carol, Uncle David, Uncle Robbie and Aunty Lynda. Once he caught onto how the game worked, he loved it. He would wait around at the shuffle board courts to try and challenge newcomers.
There was even one summer where he stayed with the Shutesbury clan. He told them that during the day he would mow the lawn. When they would come home from work he would be sitting on the deck with the dogs smoking his cigarettes, claiming he mowed the lawn. After a few days, the discovery was made that Uncle Richard didn’t even know how to turn on the riding lawn mower.
Uncle Richard was the one person at Grammy’s house to race everyone to the couch to get a spot for a nap after a big meal. He was the Uncle that would always wish you a happy birthday at the end of every phone conversation, even though it was months away. We will always remember him telling you to sort your rubbish or bop bop bop, you nut. We obviously needed to sensor some of our memories, because we all know Uncle Richard had a tendency to have a dirty mouth.
We will always remember Uncle Richard as the only person that ate salad with a meatball on top, who bought life savor story books for Christmas presents and referred to the steamers he ate as puss bellies.
Needless to say, Uncle Richard was a fun loving, big hearted man. Although he never had any kids, there is no doubt in any of our minds that he loved his nieces and nephews as if they were his own. He provided us with a lot of great memories. His presence will be missed more than he will know.
We love you.

Cool people ice skate!

When was the last time you went ice skating? I feel like everything is harder as an adult...and it is so much more embarrassing to fall when you are 22 verse 9 years old. I can say proudly that neither the roommate or I fell! Mission complete.

The Poor Ogre...

I heard from Daddy V that our little Ogre might be gone forever...
Jasper James was given to me on my 15th birthday! My brother and neighbor put together a scavenger hunt and it ended with little Jasper curled up in a box in the bathroom. I don't think he walked for the first year of his life. I carried him around everywhere but Jasper was on the spectrum. He could have easily been diagnosed with asperger syndrome. He only wanted to be touched when it was convenient for him. He was suppose to be an indoor cat. Daddy V even made signs for every door in the house stating that the cat was not allowed outside. Yet, Houdini Jasper never failed to sneak out the door.
He was a beautiful cat full of sass...

Dedicated to Uncle Richard

This is a picture of all NINE of my crazy aunts and uncles. My grandmother obviously was getting busy for most of her life. (Although when she was asked how she could have possibly had nine kids, she said she was asleep every time! Ha.)
Anyways, we are lucky enough to have all nine of them still with us. Although there are constant spats and debacles amongst the nine Vassallo siblings, it doesn't make our family any less amazing! I learned yesterday that my Uncle Richard had a stroke and is now in the hospital unresponsive. The doctors are currently running tests to see if there is any brain activity...and I guess they will go from there. It is a gut wrenching feeling thinking that another picture like this will never be taken again. My Uncle Richard is the only one out of his siblings that does not live in Western Massachusetts. He moved to the Cape many years ago. He is a Quahogs fisherman. He always cooked up this yummy quahog appetizer. Anytime we visited him in Chatham, he would send us home with a frozen bag of them. The Cape is exactly where he belongs.

I remember him being thrilled with the gift and me begging him not to tell anyone I told him.He was a sneaky Uncle!

Needless to say, My Uncle Richard no matter the challenges and struggles he has faced in his life is a good man.He has had a lot of difficulties and obstacles to face. He has not always made the right choices in life. But I will always remember him as the fun loving, big hearted man that he is. He always makes me feel like the Queen of the world. I just wanted to pay some tribute to him in his time of need. I pray the next time I see him that I can make him feel like the King of the world. He has a lot of life left to live.
